In 2022, the Asian Games will include medal competitions for eight different games, according to the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), which made the announcement on Wednesday.
The eight medal games include FIFA (developed by EA SPORTS), an Asian Games version of PUBG Mobile and Arena of Valor, Dota 2, League of Legends, Dream Three Kingdoms 2, HearthStone, and Street Fighter V. The medal games are divided into two categories: first place and second place.
A gold, silver, and bronze medal will be awarded for each championship won, for a total of 24 medals available to be won in esports at the next continental showcase in Hangzhou, China in 2022, according to the organizers.
At the 2022 Asian Games, two additional games - Robot Masters and VR Sports - will be featured as demonstration events, in addition to the ones already announced.
"I think we have checked all the necessary boxes in terms of guaranteeing a high level of competition that will provide exciting watching for both aficionados and casual viewers," said Husain Al-Musallam, Director General of the OCA.
It is our hope, as the OCA, that we will be able to collaborate closely with our colleagues at the Asia Electronic Sports Federation and the Hangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee to guarantee the success of the esports event at the 2022 Asian Games.
